How Long Is a Baseball Game? 2026 Times by Level

A nine-inning Major League game runs about 2 hours and 43 minutes in 2026. A high school game takes roughly two hours. Little League wraps up in about 90 minutes.

That is the game itself, not how long your afternoon takes. And the big-league number is moving in a direction almost nobody expected — up.

The short answer, by level

What to expect once the first pitch is thrown:

  • MLB regular season — about 2:43 so far in 2026, up from 2:38 in 2025
  • MLB postseason — 3:00 to 3:15
  • College (NCAA Division I) — 2:45 to 3:00
  • Minor leagues — 2:35 to 2:45
  • High school (7 innings) — about 2:00
  • Little League Majors, 12U (6 innings) — 1:30 to 2:00
  • Coach pitch and tee ball — 45 minutes to 1:15
  • Travel and tournament ball — capped by a time limit, usually under 2:00

One number worth knowing: the average big-league game does not last nine innings. It lasts about 8.9 — close to one in five ends after eight and a half, with the home team already ahead.

Baseball games are getting longer again in 2026

The pitch clock arrived in 2023 and did exactly what it was meant to. Pitchers got 15 seconds with the bases empty, 18 with runners on. Hitters got 30 seconds between at-bats.

The results were immediate:

  • 2021 — 3:10
  • 2022 — 3:04
  • 2023 — 2:40
  • 2024 — 2:36
  • 2025 — 2:38

Marathons nearly vanished too. Only three games ran 3:30 or longer in 2025, down from 391 in 2021.

Then 2026 happened. Through the season's first 421 games, the average nine-inning game took 2:43 — six minutes slower than the 2:37 clocked at the same point in 2025. That is the slowest pace of the pitch-clock era.

The reasons are small and they add up. Batter timeouts have climbed from 7.7 per game in 2023 to 16.9 per game in 2026. The automated ball-strike challenge system adds 63 seconds a game across roughly 4.1 challenges. Pitchers now run the timer to the last tick, and teams throw five more pitches per game than last year.

The clock did not break. Players learned to live inside it.

Even so, this is fast by historical standards — quicker than any full season between 1985 and 2022, and a long way from 1920, when the league-wide average was 1 hour 51 minutes.

What actually stretches a game out

Five things account for most of the variance:

  • Pitching changes. The single biggest factor. A manager walks out, talks, signals, and the new arm gets eight warm-up pitches. Each change costs three to five minutes.
  • Extra innings. Every extra frame adds 15 to 20 minutes. In the regular season, the runner placed on second base to start the 10th keeps most of them short.
  • Replay reviews. One to four minutes each.
  • Between-inning breaks. Around two minutes, longer for national broadcasts.
  • Walks and deep counts. More pitches means more batters. Scoring drives length too — a 12-9 game always outlasts a 2-1 game.

Weather is the wild card. A rain delay turns a 2:40 game into a five-hour night.

High school, Little League, and travel ball

Youth baseball runs on different math, and the rulebook does the heavy lifting.

High school plays seven innings under NFHS rules, which usually lands around two hours. Most state associations add a run rule — commonly a 10-run lead after five innings — so lopsided games end early.

Little League Majors plays six innings. The official rules end a game when a team leads by 10 or more runs after four innings, or three and a half if the home team is ahead. Local leagues add their own time limits on top, which is why Little League's published rules are only half the story. Check your league's, not just the national ones.

Travel and tournament ball is where parents get caught out. Most tournaments cap games at 60 minutes or four innings, 90 minutes or five, or two hours or six. There are two very different kinds of cap:

  • No-new-inning: once the clock hits the limit, no new inning starts, but the current one finishes.
  • Drop-dead: play stops the moment the clock expires, even mid-inning.

The difference can decide a game, and organizers do not always say which they use.

How much time should you actually set aside?

How long a baseball game runs is the easy part.

For an MLB game, plan on close to four hours door to door. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for parking and gates, then allow another 30 to 45 minutes to get out — the parking ramp is often slower than the game. One fan's answer to a first-timer asking when a 7:15 start would end: roughly 9:45 — but it could be an hour less, or three more.

For a high school baseball game, add warm-ups. Teams take the field 45 to 60 minutes before first pitch, so a two-hour game still eats three hours of your evening.

For a travel-ball weekend, budget the day, not the game. Pool play Saturday plus bracket Sunday routinely keeps families there six to eight hours.

And if the weather turns: a game becomes official once five innings are complete, or four and a half if the home team leads.

The pitch clock had one side effect nobody predicted

For twenty years the complaint was that games dragged. Now a different one has surfaced — from the people in the seats.

Regulars say the game moves too fast to leave your seat. Step out for a drink and you can miss two innings. Take a child to the ballpark attractions and you miss half the game. One club responded with seat delivery, then simply let fans bring in outside food.

Their advice: stop treating first pitch as the start time. Come early and let the game be the fast part.

The bottom line

So, how long is a baseball game? About 2:43 in the majors, three hours in college, two hours in high school, and 90 minutes in Little League. The pitch clock cut nearly half an hour off the pro game in 2023, and 2026 is the first year that gain has started slipping back.

The more useful number is the one nobody publishes: your total time commitment. Add 30 to 45 minutes on each end for a big-league game, an hour up front for youth ball, and a whole day for a tournament weekend.
