Here is what nobody tells you about basketball quotes: most lists have never checked a single one. We read the five pages ranking highest for this search. Between them they carried over 600 quotes, and not one said which interview, book, press conference, or commercial it came from.

So we did that part. The quotes below are grouped by what you'd actually use them for, and about thirty carry the date and setting where the words were first said. Ten more are credited to the wrong person entirely — including one a Hall of Fame coach's own foundation gets wrong on its own website.

1. "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." Put this in a basketball graphic and half the internet will tell you Michael Jordan said it. He didn't. Wayne Gretzky did, in a January 1983 interview with Bob McKenzie for The Hockey News, and his wording was "shots you never take." The Jordan version spread partly through a running gag on The Office, where Michael Scott writes it on a whiteboard and credits both Gretzky and himself.

2. "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." Two of the five top-ranking pages give this to John Wooden. Google's AI summary gives it to Winston Churchill. Both are wrong. The Churchill quotation archive lists it under "Red Herrings: False Attributions," and the earliest close match anyone has found is a 1938 Budweiser beer advertisement.

3. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." This is wrong three ways on three different basketball pages — two credit Shaquille O'Neal, one credits Aristotle. Will Durant wrote it, in 1926, in The Story of Philosophy, while summarizing Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Aristotle never wrote that sentence, so Shaq was quoting a paraphrase of a paraphrase.

4. "Failure to prepare is preparing to fail." Wooden said this constantly and it is genuinely his. The irony: Wooden's own foundation website credits the popular variant to Benjamin Franklin, and there is no evidence Franklin said it. The earliest solid citation is Wooden himself, at Texas Tech.

5. "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." Kevin Durant made it famous, quoting it after his 2007 Naismith award and tweeting it on January 4, 2012 as his favorite quote. He never claimed to have written it. Credit goes to Tim Notke, a Minneapolis high school coach who used it in the 1980s and 90s. No published first appearance has ever been found: the most repeated line in basketball started in a high school gym.

Three tiers. Anything with a date and a setting was traced to a primary source — an autobiography, a filmed press conference, a dated interview, or the commercial it aired in. A name with no date means the attribution is standard but we found no original. Anything we could not confirm is flagged above or left out.
