Fastest NBA Player: Every Sub-3.00 Sprint (2026)

Ask ten fans who the fastest NBA player is and you get ten answers. Ask for a number and the room goes quiet.

So we went and got the numbers. The fastest time ever recorded in the league's own speed test belongs to Devin Carter, who ran the three-quarter court sprint in 2.87 seconds at the 2024 Draft Combine. Nothing in the NBA's official database is faster, and that database covers every combine from 2000 through 2026.

This list ranks players by that test and nothing else. It is the only straight-line speed measurement the NBA runs on everybody, publishes openly, and keeps on file across 27 draft classes. We went through all 27 by hand. Seventeen players have broken three seconds. Here they are.

At a Glance: Every Sub-3.00 NBA Combine Sprint on Record

Every player who has run the three-quarter court sprint in under 3.00 seconds, as recorded by NBA.com. Times come from each player's draft combine, not from their NBA career.

Rank Player Three-Quarter Sprint Combine Class
1 Devin Carter 2.87 2024
2 Cookie Belcher 2.91 2001
3 Jason Gardner 2.92 2001

T4 Reece Beekman 2.94 2024
T6 Nate Robinson 2.96 2004
T6 Sonny Weems 2.96 2008
8 Sion James 2.97 2025
T9 AJ Lawson 2.98 2021
T9 Scottie Lewis 2.98 2021
11 Joe Alexander 2.99 2008
T12 Schea Cotton 3.00 2000
T12 SirValiant Brown 3.00 2001
T12 Will Bynum 3.00 2005
T12 Daishen Nix 3.00 2021
T12 Keon Johnson 3.00 2021
T12 Jalon Moore 3.00 2025

How We Ranked This List

The three-quarter court sprint is a 75-foot dash from the baseline to the far free-throw line extended, run without a ball from a standing start. Every prospect who tests at the combine runs it, and the league posts the result.

We pulled all 27 classes in the NBA's combine database and kept every time under 3.00 seconds. No estimates, no rounding, no secondhand numbers.

Two things we deliberately left out. The first is the 40-yard dash. You will see 40 times attached to NBA players in other lists — the NBA has never run that drill, so those figures come from somewhere other than the league. The second is in-game tracking speed, which measures something different and is easy to misread. More on that below.

One honest limit: this test captures one athlete on one day, in a gym, before they have played an NBA minute. It is a measurement, not a verdict.

The Fastest Combine Sprints, One by One

Here are the seven players who have run under 2.97 seconds, in order.

Devin Carter

2.87 seconds, 2024 combine. Carter's run is the NBA combine sprint record, and it broke a mark that had stood since 2001. In the 23 combine classes between 2001 and 2024, with several hundred prospects timed, nobody beat the old number. Carter did it by four hundredths.

Cookie Belcher

2.91 seconds, 2001 combine. For 23 years this was the fastest sprint the NBA had on file. The same sheet shows Belcher with a 41.5-inch max vertical, so this was not a light-frame fluke. His time is also the clearest example of how thin the coverage of this data has been: it sits second all-time and almost no list article mentions him.

Jason Gardner

2.92 seconds, 2001 combine. Gardner ran the third-fastest sprint on record on the same afternoon Belcher ran the second-fastest. The two quickest times of the entire pre-2024 era happened at one combine, in one gym, hours apart. Gardner also posted a 10.88-second lane agility time on that sheet, quick even by guard standards.

Jamal Shead and Reece Beekman

2.94 seconds each, 2024 combine. Both ran in the same class as Carter. Three of the eight fastest sprints ever recorded came out of that one combine, Either that was an unusually fast draft class or preparation has improved; either way it is the deepest speed class on record.

Nate Robinson

2.96 seconds, 2004 combine. Robinson is the rare name here that fans already know. The same official sheet lists a 43.5-inch max vertical alongside the sprint, which is the combination that made a 5-foot-9 guard a first-round pick and, later, a three-time dunk contest winner.

Sonny Weems

2.96 seconds, 2008 combine. Weems tied Robinson, and the context is the interesting part. Two other guards tested at that same 2008 combine: Derrick Rose ran 3.05 and Russell Westbrook ran 3.08. Weems beat both by a clear margin and is not the player anyone names when the topic comes up.

Why Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook Aren't on This List

This is where the numbers stop matching the conversation about the fastest player in NBA history, and it is worth being direct about why.

Rose ran 3.05. Westbrook ran 3.08. John Wall, whose end-to-end speed defined a decade of highlight reels, ran 3.14 in 2010. Donovan Mitchell ran 3.01 in 2017 and still missed the cut. None of them are slow — they are just not the fastest in a standing 75-foot dash with no ball.

Plenty of famous names are missing for a simpler reason: they never took the test. LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis all appear on NBA.com's combine sheets with every column blank.

And the sprint does not measure the thing fans usually mean. Game speed involves a live dribble, a defender, deceleration and a decision. That is a different skill, and it is the one that shows up when you watch a possession back on game film rather than in a stopwatch column.

The Fastest Active Players Right Now

Carter still holds the record and still plays, which makes the all-time answer and the current answer the same person for now.

Behind him, the two most recent classes have produced real speed. Sion James ran 2.97 in 2025, the eighth-fastest time on record. Jalon Moore ran 3.00 the same year. From the 2024 class, Isaiah Collier and Ja'Kobe Walter both ran 3.04. From 2021, Jericho Sims ran 3.05 and Austin Reaves — not a name associated with straight-line speed — ran 3.07.

The 2026 class produced nobody under 3.05; the fastest were Billy Richmond III and Darius Acuff Jr. at 3.06 apiece.

A word of caution about the other number people cite. NBA.com also publishes player tracking data with an average speed in miles per hour. It gets quoted as a speed ranking. It is not one. In 2025-26 the top of that leaderboard was a rookie who appeared in two games for three minutes a night. Average speed tracks how much of the game a player spends running rather than walking, which is why hard-working bigs often outrank explosive guards on it.

The Short Version

There is no single answer to "fastest NBA player," but there is an honest one. If you want a number that everybody ran, that the league recorded, and that anyone can check, it is the three-quarter court sprint — and Devin Carter's 2.87 seconds sits on top of 27 years of it.

What it cannot tell you is who looks fastest with a ball in their hands. For that you still have to watch the tape.
