Will Neymar Play in the 2026 World Cup?

The honest answer: it’s looking very unlikely. As of April 2026, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has left Neymar out of four consecutive squad announcements. Trusted Brazilian football reporters say his chances of playing in the 2026 World Cup are now effectively “at zero.”

But one more squad announcement is still coming. And Neymar refuses to give up.

The Injury That Changed Everything

Neymar’s road to the 2026 World Cup starts on one brutal night in October 2023.

Playing for Brazil against Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier, he tore both his ACL and meniscus in his left knee. He had signed for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia just weeks earlier and had played only five games before the injury wiped out his entire season.

He returned over a year later — and suffered a hamstring setback in his second match back. Al-Hilal eventually terminated his contract. Neymar went home to Santos in early 2025.

He scored 11 goals with 5 assists in the 2025 Brazilian Serie A season, helping Santos avoid relegation. But he also missed 18 matches with recurring hamstring issues. Then, in December 2025, he went under the knife again — arthroscopic surgery to repair a medial meniscus lesion in the same left knee.

He was back on the pitch by mid-February 2026. He scored twice in a 3-0 win over Vasco da Gama. But his Santos manager has been cautiously managing his minutes ever since, citing load-management concerns.

What Ancelotti Has Said

Ancelotti has been consistent since taking charge of Brazil in June 2025: fitness is the only criteria, and Neymar hasn’t met it.

“Neymar is not at 100% and therefore he is not on the list,” Ancelotti said in March 2026. “If he can be at 100% physically, he can be there.”

But his actions have spoken louder. In March, Ancelotti traveled several hours to watch Neymar play for Santos — and Neymar sat out the match, reportedly due to muscle fatigue. The CBF reportedly viewed the absence as a serious lack of commitment.

After that, Ancelotti left Neymar out of the March 26-man squad and declared the group is now “quite defined.” That’s as close to a closed door as it gets.

Brazil’s final squad announcement is expected around May 18, with FIFA’s official deadline on May 30.

Can He Still Make It?

Technically, yes. The window is narrow, but it hasn’t shut completely.

Neymar addressed his March exclusion publicly: “There’s still one final squad announcement to go and the dream lives on.”

Legends have backed him. Romario said he’d take Neymar at 50%. Thiago Silva called inclusion “indisputable” if Neymar is fit. Vinicius Jr. has publicly supported him. But support from teammates doesn’t change the medical reality.

CNN Brasil journalist Joao Vitor Xavier reported in late March that Neymar’s chances are “at zero.” That’s the coldest verdict yet from inside Brazilian football media.

He’ll turn 34 during the tournament. His relationship with the CBF has deteriorated. And Brazil’s attacking depth — Vinicius Jr., Raphinha, Martinelli, Matheus Cunha, Endrick — gives Ancelotti every reason to go without him.

Brazil’s Plan Either Way

Neymar is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals. He hasn’t worn the Seleção shirt since the night his knee gave out in October 2023.

Without him, Brazil had pace and talent but no central figure to connect midfield with attack — no one to control tempo the way Neymar once did. Ancelotti’s counter-attacking setup has leaned heavily on Vinicius Jr. to carry the creative burden.

The honest assessment: Brazil is better with a fit Neymar. But a 34-year-old Neymar, two knee surgeries deep, playing through load management at club level — that’s a gamble most World Cup coaches won’t take.

Ancelotti has told us clearly he won’t take it. Unless something changes dramatically over the next six weeks, will Neymar play in the 2026 World Cup? Almost certainly not.

The dream isn’t officially dead. But the clock is running out fast.
