What Is ERA in Baseball? Formula and Good ERA by Level
ERA stands for earned run average. It tells you how many earned runs a pitcher gives up per nine innings. Lower is better — think golf, not basketball.
That is the whole answer, and most explanations of ERA in baseball stop there. The problem is that the number on your kid's stat page may not mean what you think it does. The multiplier changes by age level, a scorekeeper decides which runs count, and one rough inning can move a youth ERA by more than a full point.

How to Calculate ERA in Baseball
The ERA formula is short:
ERA = (Earned Runs × 9) ÷ Innings Pitched
A pitcher who allows 8 earned runs over 24 innings has an ERA of 3.00.
The part people get wrong is innings pitched. Baseball counts innings in thirds, because each out is one-third of an inning. So 5.1 means five innings and one out — not five and one-tenth — and 5.2 means five and two-thirds.
Drop those into a calculator as decimals and the math breaks. A pitcher with 5.2 innings and 3 earned runs is at 3 × 9 ÷ 5.667 = 4.76. Treat 5.2 as a decimal and you get 5.19. The clean fix is counting outs instead: the NCAA statisticians' manual allows multiplying earned runs by 27 and dividing by total outs, so 3 × 27 ÷ 17 = 4.76. Same answer, no fractions to fumble.
What Counts as an Earned Run
An earned run is one that would have scored with clean defense behind the pitcher. Runs that only happen because of an error or a passed ball are unearned, and they never touch ERA.
Rule 9.16 tells the official scorer to "reconstruct the inning without the errors and passed balls, giving the benefit of the doubt always to the pitcher." Its own example makes that concrete: two outs, nobody on, the third batter reaches on an error, the next two hitters both homer. Three runs score, none earned — the inning should already have been over. Follow the logic far enough and a pitcher can surrender a double-digit inning after a two-out error and still carry a 0.00 ERA.
Three edge cases settle most youth-league arguments:
- Wild pitch vs. passed ball. A wild pitch is the pitcher's fault, so runs scoring on one are earned. A passed ball is the catcher's, so those runs are unearned. Same play from the stands, opposite result on the stat sheet.
- Catcher's interference. A batter who reaches this way can never become an earned run.
- The automatic runner. Since 2023, MLB regular-season extra innings start with a runner on second, and if that runner scores no earned run is charged. Postseason has no automatic runner, so the exemption disappears in October.

What Is a Good ERA in Baseball?
It depends on the level and on that season's run environment.
Across Major League Baseball, the league ERA was 4.15 in 2025, 4.07 in 2024, and 4.33 in 2023. So roughly 4.10 is average, under 3.50 is good, under 3.00 is excellent. In 2025 Tarik Skubal led the AL at 2.21 and Paul Skenes led the NL at 1.97.

The bottom two rows need a footnote most articles skip. The NCAA has not published a national composite ERA since 2018, when it sat at 4.88, and no governing body publishes a high school average at all. The 2.00-to-4.00 range quoted online comes from recruiting sites, not data. Treat those rows as rules of thumb.
Why the "9" Isn't Always 9
Here is the part almost nobody writes down, and it changes how you read your kid's stat page.
The 9 is just the length of a regulation professional game. Youth baseball isn't nine innings, so the scoring platform most youth teams use multiplies by the length of your game instead. Its published defaults are six innings for 8U through 12U, seven for 13U through 18U and high school, and nine only for college baseball.
That is not a rounding difference. Take a pitcher with 20 innings and 10 earned runs:
- Six-inning setting: 3.00
- Seven-inning setting: 3.50
- Nine-inning setting: 4.50
Same kid, same season, same runs — a 50% spread. College goes the other way and standardizes everything; the NCAA manual states flatly that all earned run averages must be based on nine innings. So before comparing a 12U pitcher's 2.80 to a high schooler's 3.40, check what each app multiplied by.
What ERA Doesn't Tell You
ERA measures what happened while a pitcher was on the mound, not how well he pitched. At the youth level that gap gets wide.

Small samples swing violently. A high school pitcher might throw 25 innings all season. At 24 innings and 8 earned runs he sits at a tidy 3.00. One inning where four runs cross moves him to 4.32 — one inning out of twenty-five, and the number describes a different pitcher.
The defense is baked in, and someone has to judge it. Two identical grounders into the hole: the shortstop with less range never reaches it, so it's a hit and the run is earned; the shortstop with more range gets there and throws it away, so it's an error and the run is unearned. Defense failed both times, but only one pitcher gets charged. At youth levels that call belongs to a parent with a tablet. One scorekeeper describes a division where nothing is ever ruled an error, quietly inflating every ERA in it; another admits to scoring generously for kids fighting their confidence. Neither is dishonest, and both make the number soft. Teams that record their games settle disputed plays faster, which is part of why filming Little League games is now routine even in rec ball.
Errors still cost the pitcher, just not here. An inning that should have ended in nine pitches takes seventeen after two misplays. ERA protects the line score, not the pitch count — and pitch count is what ends youth outings.
Analysts route around this with adjusted stats. Fielding Independent Pitching grades a pitcher only on strikeouts, walks, hit batters, and home runs — the outcomes he controls alone; Statcast's xERA estimates what his ERA should have been given how hard the ball was hit. Both are printed on the ERA scale — nobody replaced ERA, they built better instruments and kept its units.
Which is the case for keeping it. At twelve, a stat that forgives everything after an error isn't a bug. It hands a kid who threw strikes and got let down a number that says so.
The Short Version
ERA is earned runs times nine, divided by innings pitched. Count innings in thirds or the math breaks. Runs count as earned only if they would have scored behind clean defense, which puts the scorer inside the equation. Roughly 4.10 is average in the majors and under 3.00 is excellent, but no trustworthy national average exists below college.
Above all, check what your scoring app multiplied by before comparing two pitchers. A 3.00 built on six innings and a 3.00 built on nine are not the same accomplishment.
