XbotGo Falcon: A Baseball Camera Built for the Whole Diamond

Most auto-tracking cameras were built for soccer and basketball. Baseball breaks them. Starting with XbotGo APP v4.4.9 and Falcon firmware v3.3.0, XbotGo Falcon runs a dedicated Baseball Mode that takes the opposite approach: a fixed, full-field view of the whole diamond, a zoom you control yourself, and a scoreboard built for baseball. Here's why a baseball camera that refuses to chase the ball is the right call for this sport — and how to set one up.

Why a Baseball Camera Shouldn't Chase the Ball

Auto-tracking works by following one object through continuous play inside a bounded space. Soccer and basketball give an algorithm exactly that. Baseball gives it none of the three.

Start with the ball. It is under three inches across and leaves a pitcher's hand fast — big-league four-seamers average above 94 mph, and even travel-ball arms throw hard enough to blur across a frame in a few thousandths of a second. That is a rough target for a vision system tuned to a soccer ball.

Then there's the geometry. A diamond spreads the action out and splits it up. A pitch, a swing, a runner breaking for second, and an outfielder reading a fly ball can all happen inside the same three seconds, in four different places. Even a standard Little League field runs 60 feet between bases with the outfield fence far beyond that. No single tracking shot holds all of it, and a camera that picks one subject is guaranteed to miss the play that mattered.

That's the tell in how broadcast-grade baseball setups are built: they usually run two fixed cameras, one behind the plate and one in the outfield, rather than one camera hunting for the ball. Baseball Mode makes the same bet with one camera — cover everything, lose nothing.

Where to Put the Camera

Set the Falcon up behind home plate, as close to the center line as you can get. From there the frame holds pitching, batting, and the defense at once, which is the angle coaches and recruiting coordinators actually want.

One practical note that trips people up: backstop netting. Owners filming baseball hit this early — as one put it, the camera "can't actually sit behind the fence or it'll keep focusing on the mesh." Pull back a few feet or get above the netting, and shoot from as high as your tripod allows. Elevation flattens the infield out and keeps runners from stacking on top of each other.

Manual Zoom on Your Terms

Baseball Mode does not auto-zoom, and that's deliberate. You adjust the framing yourself: pinch the screen, or tap a preset zoom level. It answers the most common complaint about AI zoom on a diamond — that you can't override the framing when the camera guesses wrong.

Tighten up for a pitching duel, then pull back before the next batter steps in. Nothing moves unless you move it, so the shot never drifts off mid-inning.

A Scoreboard Built for Baseball

A static wide shot is honest, but it can be hard to read on replay — three innings in, nobody remembers the count. So Baseball Mode puts a baseball scoreboard right in the recording view: innings, outs, and both sides' runs, updated with a tap.

It stays on screen in the footage. Every clip you cut or share carries its own game situation, which is the piece that makes a fixed full-field angle genuinely watchable rather than just complete.

Softball Works the Same Way

Baseball Mode records softball games too, with the same behind-the-plate placement. Nothing to switch, nothing to reconfigure.

What It Doesn't Do

Worth being straight about the trade-offs. In Baseball Mode there is no AI tracking and no auto zoom — that's the whole point, but it does mean you're getting a wide game record, not a player-following highlight cam. It's also Falcon-only for now; Chameleon and Gimbal don't support it.

If you're shopping for a baseball camera and that trade sounds right, the XbotGo Falcon shoots 4K, runs on its own battery without a phone attached, and still does full AI tracking for soccer, basketball, and 10+ other sports when you switch modes. One camera, no subscription.

Getting the Update

Update the XbotGo APP to version 4.4.9 or later from the App Store or Google Play — the 4.4.9 release notes cover what else shipped with it. Then update your Falcon to firmware v3.3.0 with one tap. Baseball Mode shows up in the mode list right after.

That's the short version: a full-diamond wide shot, manual zoom when you want it, and a baseball scoreboard baked into the frame. Set it behind the plate, hit record, and go watch the game.
