Baseball Field Dimensions: Official Sizes for Every Level
A regulation baseball field has 90-foot base paths and a pitching rubber 60 feet 6 inches from home plate. That answer is correct, and for most people searching for baseball field dimensions, it is also the wrong answer.
Those numbers describe the game from about age 13 up, where high school, college, and the majors share an identical infield. Below that, field size is not set by your child's age. It is set by whichever organization sanctions the league — and two leagues in the same town, running the same age group, can legally play different-sized diamonds.
Here is every official dimension by level, where the organizations disagree, and how to measure a field without getting it wrong.
The Regulation Diamond
The Official Baseball Rules define the full-size field:
- Base paths: 90 feet, forming a 90-foot square
- Home plate to second base: 127 feet 3⅜ inches
- Pitching distance: 60 feet 6 inches, from the back point of home plate to the front edge of the rubber
- Mound: 10 inches above home plate, inside an 18-foot circle, sloping 1 inch per foot for 6 feet toward home
- Home plate: a 17-inch front edge, two 8½-inch sides, two 12-inch sides
- Batter's box: 4 feet wide by 6 feet long, inside line 6 inches from the plate
Pin that last one down, because several widely read field guides publish the batter's box as 3 feet by 7 feet. MLB, the NCAA, and the high school federation all specify 4 by 6.
The 90 feet runs from the apex of home plate to the back corner of the bag, not edge to edge, so runners cover less ground than the number suggests. Since 2023, less again: MLB grew its bases from 15 inches square to 18, trimming 4½ inches off the trip from first to second. Little League never followed, and college baseball is still on 15-inch bases.

Two rows there rarely appear anywhere else. Mound height changes by division — 6 inches in Little League Majors, 8 inches on the Intermediate field, 10 inches from Junior League up. Backstop distance is not constant either: Little League recommends 25 feet for Majors and below, the NCAA 45, and both MLB and the high school federation 60.
Same Age, Different League, Different Field
Ask what size field a 12-year-old plays on and every organization gives a different answer.

None of those are wrong. All of them are official. And local boards layer options on top: Little League field specifications allow a shortened Tee Ball diamond, DYB lets a league drop its AAA pitching distance to 43 feet, and Cal Ripken states plainly that its age groupings are recommendations a local league can change.
Kids routinely play several field sizes in one year. One parent described a 12-year-old on the small diamond for his rec league, 50/70 for travel ball, and the full-size field for middle school — same season.
The question is never how old the age group is. It is who sanctions the game.
The 50/70 Step and the 60/90 Cliff
The two jumps are not equal, and coaches are blunt about which one hurts.
Going from 60/46 to 50/70 adds 10 feet of base path and 4 feet of pitching distance. Most players treat it as a mild adjustment, because the extra reaction time at the plate roughly offsets the longer throws in the field.
The move to a full 90-foot diamond is a different event. "Home runs turn into routine fly balls and fast base stealers are getting thrown out," one coach wrote. An umpire working his first freshman game had the same read: the players looked lost, because most had been rec-league stars now humbled by the size of a real field.
Two second-order effects catch teams off guard. The backstop sits more than 20 feet further back, so a passed ball becomes close to an automatic run. And outfielders position themselves off the edge of the infield dirt instead of off actual distance, which leaves them playing far too deep on a converted field.
Why No Two Outfields Match
Every infield above is fixed. Outfields are not, and the rulebook is looser than most guides admit.
The Official Baseball Rules require only 250 feet from home plate to the nearest fence in fair territory. The familiar 320 feet down the lines and 400 to center are listed as preferable, not required. A hard minimum of 325 and 400 does exist, but it applies only to parks built after June 1, 1958.
That date is the whole story. The Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and played in a football stadium whose left-field fence sat roughly 250 feet out behind a 40-foot screen. The minimum was written afterward, and every park already standing was grandfathered in. That is why Fenway Park's right-field line is a perfectly legal 302 feet — the shortest in the majors — while Coors Field runs 415 to center.
Even the post-1958 minimum bends. Camden Yards opened in 1992 at 318 feet down the right-field line, and Petco Park opened in 2004 at 396 to center.
Youth fences follow recommendations rather than rules. Little League suggests 200 feet, USSSA lists 230 feet down the lines at 12U, and the NCAA rules book recommends 330 down the lines and 400 to center.
How to Measure a Field Without Getting It Wrong
Most layout errors come from measuring to the wrong point.
Every measurement starts at the apex — the back point of home plate. From there you measure to the back corner of first and third base, and to the center of second. Pull tape from the back corners of first and third at the same time; where the two arcs cross is second base.
Then check the diagonal. On 60-foot base paths, home to second should be about 84 feet 10 inches; on 90-foot paths, 127 feet 3⅜ inches. If it comes up short, the diamond is skewed even when every base path measures correctly.
Use a steel tape, not fiberglass — fiberglass stretches, and a stretched tape reads long on every pull.
These errors survive. One college program found mid-renovation that its mound was a foot too long and three feet off-center — after a full season had been played on it.
