Best Baseball Quotes: The Real Ones and the Misquoted

If you want the single best baseball quote, most people point to the same afternoon: Yankee Stadium, July 4, 1939. A dying man stood in front of 61,808 people and told them he was lucky.

That one is easy. Everything after it gets messy.

A lot of the most-repeated lines in this sport were never said by the person who gets credit. Some were said differently. At least one appears to have been invented by a movie. Most lists of the best baseball quotes copy each other and pass the errors along.

So this list does two jobs. It gives you the quotes worth keeping, with the story behind each one. Then it shows you which famous ones you're probably getting wrong.

The Quotes That Define Baseball

These are the famous baseball quotes that hold up once you know where they came from. Each one has a date, a room, and a reason.

Lou Gehrig, July 4, 1939

Gehrig had played 2,130 straight games. On May 2, 1939, in Detroit, he took himself out of the lineup. He was hitting .143 and told his manager the team was better without him. Two months later the Yankees held Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day between games of a doubleheader against Washington.

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth."

Here's what almost no list tells you. There is no complete recording of that speech. Only a short scrap of newsreel film survives — roughly three sentences, one of them the famous one. The "full text" you find online was reconstructed afterward from sportswriters' notes, which is why the wording shifts slightly from source to source.

And the version most people carry in their head is wrong in one specific way. In the 1942 film The Pride of the Yankees, "luckiest man" is the closing line. Gehrig said it near the beginning. You can read the Hall of Fame's account of the day.

He died on June 2, 1941. He was 37.

Bart Giamatti on why the season hurts

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone."

This is the opening of "The Green Fields of the Mind," published in the Yale Alumni Magazine in November 1977. Giamatti was 40, a lifelong Red Sox fan, and had just been named president of Yale — which is the only reason a college alumni magazine ran a baseball essay at all. He later became commissioner of Major League Baseball.

Fans love this passage and are a little embarrassed by how much they love it. One put it well: "I know, I'm completely unoriginal, but I sincerely do love it."

Earl Weaver on why baseball is the best game

The Orioles manager gave what may be the sport's most quoted defense of itself, and it barely shows up on editorial lists.

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all."

No clock. No kneeling on it. You have to get the last out, and the other team gets to swing.

Vin Scully, and the minute he said nothing

Kirk Gibson's home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series produced the line everyone repeats: "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!"

Almost nobody mentions when Scully said it. At contact he called only, "High fly ball into right field, she is... gone!" Then he stopped talking. For more than a minute he let the crowd carry it. The famous sentence came after the silence, not during the swing. The full game account is worth reading.

Knowing when to shut up is a skill. It's most of what made him great.

Buck O'Neil, Cooperstown, 2006

In February 2006, a special committee elected 17 Negro Leagues figures to the Hall of Fame. O'Neil, who had spent decades keeping those stories alive, was not one of them. He went to Cooperstown that July anyway and spoke on behalf of all 17.

"I'd rather be right here, right now, representing these people that helped build a bridge across the chasm of prejudice."

He also said, plainly, "I never learned to hate." Then he got the entire crowd to sing with him. He died three months later. The Hall finally elected him in 2022.

Baseball Quotes People Get Wrong

This is the part no other list will give you. Every quote below is repeated constantly and credited to the wrong person, or quoted in the wrong words.

"You can't steal second base and keep your foot on first." Some sites credit Frederick B. Wilcox. Others credit Reggie Jackson. Neither is right. Newspaper columnist Robert Quillen wrote it in March 1924. Wilcox edited a 1947 collection of aphorisms; somewhere in the 1990s the editor quietly became the author.

"Baseball is ninety percent mental. The other half is physical." The most repeated of all Yogi Berra quotes, and it wasn't his — at least not first. Royals outfielder Jim Wohlford said "Ninety percent of this game is half mental" in 1974. It was pinned on a Phillies manager in 1977 and landed on Berra by 1979.

"Nice guys finish last." Leo Durocher, July 6, 1946, during batting practice at the Polo Grounds. What he actually said, pointing at the Giants, was "The nice guys are all over there, in seventh place." The Giants were in seventh. A later reprint swapped "seventh" for "last." Durocher denied saying it, then accepted it, then used it as the title of his autobiography.

"Say it ain't so, Joe." The reporter who was outside the courthouse in 1920 wrote the boy's words down as "It ain't so, Joe, is it?" Shoeless Joe Jackson spent the rest of his life saying no child said anything to him that day.

"Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game." Credited to Babe Ruth on jerseys, gym walls, and half the lists on the internet. There is no primary source for it — no book, no interview, no contemporary report. Its traceable path to fame runs through a 2004 movie, A Cinderella Story.

"If you build it, they will come." It's singular. Field of Dreams says "If you build it, he will come." The "he" looks like Shoeless Joe. It turns out to be Ray's father.

The right person to close this section is Berra himself, who saw the whole problem coming. From his 1997 book: "I really didn't say everything I said." He added, "Then again, I might have said 'em, but you never know."

Baseball Quotes About Failure

Failure is the actual subject of this sport. A great hitter fails seven times out of ten and gets a plaque for it. That's why the most inspirational baseball quotes are rarely about winning.

Baseball humor ages better than most sports humor, probably because the game leaves so much time to think of something.

The Quotes That Actually Stick

Here's the thing about the best baseball quotes. The one that shaped you probably wasn't said by a Hall of Famer. It was said by somebody standing near a fence.

One fan's favorite came from a pitching coach at a clinic, and it isn't clever at all: "It's a great day for the great game."

Another remembers a coach benching a player who threw his helmet after a strikeout — with no substitutes available, so the team played a man short. The reason given: "We have to control our emotions, or our emotions will control us." Two years later, it hadn't happened again.

One traveling coach opens every season with a demonstration. He stuffs baseballs into a kid's glove one at a time, naming a mistake with each — an error, a strikeout, a dropped fly ball. When the glove is full, he tosses another ball. The kid can't catch it. The point: carry your mistakes and you can't play.

It works the other way too, which is why what gets said matters. One player still remembers being 12, two outs, and hearing "whatever you do, don't strike out." He struck out. Another asked his coach why he never played and was told his stats weren't good enough. It took him years to enjoy the game again.

Youth baseball today is documented better than 1939 ever was, between scorekeeping apps and sideline cameras that catch every pitch. The at-bats survive now. The sentence somebody says on the drive home still doesn't.

The best baseball quote is still Gehrig's, and it's better once you know only a scrap of it survives on film. The most quoted lines in the sport — the 90 percent mental one, nice guys finishing last, stealing second with your foot on first — belong to people who almost never get named. Babe Ruth probably never said the thing on the poster.
